Everyone needs a Buddy - and this little guy is mine. Got him from a friend who could no longer care for him, so sort of a 'rescue' dog. He fit right in and likes to follow me everywhere.

Continuing with the 'building a bed' post (here for first post on this topic).

I used up some lumber I had previously used for a project and then taken apart when I no longer needed that project.

Cost so far: just the $5.00 for the Oak head and foot board.  The blue paint I used was $5.00 for the gallon and I have already used that same paint for other projects. The red was left over from another project.

I built the frame at home, dismantled it, packed it into my little car (rear seat folded down, passenger seat folded frontwards). It always amazes me that I can get so much large stuff into a small car.

Drove back to my Dad's where I stay when I am working on the Coast and put the frame/bed back together and started painting.

Painted first coat (light blue) Saturday. Moved the next painting job to the garage for the head/footboards, (my first coat was too light). I was trying for a Heritage Red (home made chalk paint). Attached the head/footboards and added the slat boards.

Got the bed together, made up. The dowels in the foot/head boards are going to be pulled out. Job done.


Even though it was latex paint the fumes really made me feel sick. I did the blue painting in my bedroom (should have used the garage). New rule for me: paint outside, let it dry and THEN put the item into the house. I ran an AirSource, a fan, opened the window and had a nap to see if that would make me feel better. Left the window cracked and the AirSource running all night and that helped. I think the years of carpentry and exposure to air borne toxins on the job have made my lungs more sensitive to any fumes. Sleep did help.

Small Fir Book Shelf Renew...

Slowly working my way through the re-do on my room. Started with the furniture. This is project # 4.
1st project here, 2nd project here, 3rd project here.

I have had this fir shelf, garage sale find, for quite some time. It had a very wobbly frame, needed fixing and paint. Took some time in the garage with a few tools and a couple of colours of home made chalk paint.

 The start - removing foot pieces

 Cool old screws one gross per box, drill bits used

 Repairs, missing parts added for support.

First coat of home made chalk paint (post with my recipe here)

 First coat, then two colours

Trim paint highlight, a friend said it has a beach look.

 In place, started adding collections.

My room is somewhat closer to being finished. 

I stay with my Dad who is 91 during the work week and I've been working on projects around his condo. I've been painting the furniture I added and its about time to work on the framework - walls, window and floors.

I want to paint the wooden wall out in a pale blue first and if that doesn't look quite right I will try white. Board and batten look. Need to paint/rebuild the bed too and talk my sister in to making a curtain in a blue/white fabric.

I am thinking of removing the carpet and installing plank flooring as well (future plan).

Compare the changes.

Old Home Made Desk Renewed

Here is  my pride and joy. I picked this desk up a few years ago at a 21st Century Antique Show. It is from back East and is made from Ash. I think it is a homemade piece. Have been wanting to freshen it up for some time. Using the same chalk paint I mixed up from my post on home made chalk paint here, I spent part of Thursday afternoon cleaning the desk, painting and when it was very dry, waxing and buffing.

 Before pictures, anything to freshen this desk would look good.

 I left the unpainted underside alone so the original wood could be seen.

 Nice contrast from truly vintage yellow to a calm shade of green.
